Keto Diet during Pregnancy



Keto Diet definition:
It is a low carbs and high in fat diet.
75% of your daily calories is fat, 20% from protein and only 5% from carbohydrates.


In average diet, you consume about 250 grams of carbohydrates a day. But in Keto diet, you consume only about 20 grams of carbs a day.


Following Keto diet means eliminating almost all the sources of carbs including fruits and some types of vegetables.


The goal from this kind of diet is to burn fat instead of carbs (glucose) for energy.


Keto diet safety in pregnancy:
Still studies are not enough to prove the clear effect of keto diet on pregnancy.
But it is advised not to follow this diet during pregnancy as:

1- Fetal brain requires glucose for development.
2- May effects fetus weight.
3- Studies done on mice showed effects on heart and brain development.
4- Keto diet aim is to lose weight, but losing weight during pregnancy is not recommended.
5- Fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants will be short as whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables will be restricted.
6- Constipation is common during pregnancy, and fibers help to ease it.
7- Some types of carbs help in fighting nausea and morning sickness.
