Contraceptive Methods with Breastfeeding



  • Hormonal IUD and Copper IUD
    • It can be inserted immediately after birth, within 48 hours.
    • If more than 48 hours , it is usually recommended to wait 4 weeks, but you should consult your doctor about the appropriate time for you.
  • Contraceptive Injection
    • If breastfeeding, usually given after 6 weeks.
  • Contraceptive Implant
    • Less than 21 days after birth: effective immediately.
    • 21 days or more days after birth: it is advised to use another contraception method like condoms for 7 days.
  • Progestogen-only pills
    • If started on day 21 after birth, they are effective immediately.
    • If started more than 21 days after birth, it is advised to use another contraceptive method such as condoms for 2 – 7 days.
