Contraceptive Methods with Breastfeeding
- Hormonal IUD and Copper IUD
- It can be inserted immediately after birth, within 48 hours.
- If more than 48 hours , it is usually recommended to wait 4 weeks, but you should consult your doctor about the appropriate time for you.
- Contraceptive Injection
- If breastfeeding, usually given after 6 weeks.
- Contraceptive Implant
- Less than 21 days after birth: effective immediately.
- 21 days or more days after birth: it is advised to use another contraception method like condoms for 7 days.
- Progestogen-only pills
- If started on day 21 after birth, they are effective immediately.
- If started more than 21 days after birth, it is advised to use another contraceptive method such as condoms for 2 – 7 days.
