Calendar Based Method of Contraception
Calendar based method of contraception:
A method for calculating days to avoid unprotected intercourse during these days to avoid unplanned pregnancy.
How to use the method:
- Monitor the length of your menstrual cycles for 6 months before using the method.
- Can be used by women of regular menstrual cycles, between 26-32 days.
- Consider the first day of bleeding as the first day of the menstrual cycle.
- Avoid unprotected intercourse between days 8-19 of the menstrual cycle (fertile days), or use another contraceptive method. (to read more about contraception methods: here)
- It is about 95% safe to have unprotected intercourse day 20 to the next menstrual period (infertile days).
You might find some information stating that it is safe to have unprotected intercourse from day 1 – 7, but the menstrual bleeding is mostly during these days and intercourse is not allowed according to Islam, unless your menstrual bleeding is shorter than 7 days.
The calendar based method can not be used with the following cases as the ovulation is irregular:
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Menstrual cycles are all shorter than 27 days
- Approaching menopause
- Given birth recently
- Breastfeeding
- Stopped using hormonal birth control methods recently
