Preparing for Surgery



  • Your doctor will ask you to undergo some tests such as blood tests, X-rays, electrocardiograms, urinalysis or other.
  • Before the surgery, stay as active as you can, eat right and get enough sleep. Stop smoking as soon as possible if you smoke.
  • Before the surgery, you will meet with your anesthesiologist to collect the information that will help determine the right anesthesia plan:
    • Discuss about your health, how physically active you are, any chronic health issues you have such as lung problems, diabetes, heart disease, liver or kidney disease, allergies, if you snore or any other sleep problems.
    • List of all medications, supplements and vitamins you take, as you might need to stop taking some of them as they may cause some problems during surgery.
    • It is important to share with your doctor any previous experience with anesthesia.
    • Ask about recovery and getting back to your normal routine.
  • Usually it is required to fast 8 hours before the surgery.
  • You might be asked to take an enema the evening before surgery to empty the bowels.
  • Wear comfortable clothing the day of the surgery.
  • On the day of surgery, do not wear jewelry, makeup, nail polish, eye contacts, and remove all body piercings.
  • Take a shower before coming to the hospital.
  • You may need to bring:
    • Official papers. 
    • Change of clothes, clean underwear.
    • Pajamas.
    • Toiletries, small towel.
    • Hairbrush, hairband, your glasses or eye contact lenses.
      • Books, electronic devices, healthy snacks
