Leg Cramps during Pregnancy

Leg cramps during pregnancy are common. They can be painful and can involve the feet and the calves.

Leg cramps start often during second and third trimester, and strike at night.

The cause is not known, but it could be due to the build-up of acids leading to involuntary contraction of muscles.


Tips to prevent and relieve leg cramps during pregnancy:
– Keeping hydrated by drinking enough water.
– 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day.
– Magnesium supplementation
– Eating food rich in magnesium such as leafy vegetables, nuts, legumes, avocado, banana, whole grains.
– Regular physical exercises to stay active, check with your doctor first. (Read more: Exercise During Pregnancy)
– Stretching calf muscles at least two times daily:
a. Hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Repeat five times per session.

 

 

 

 

 

 

b. Rotate your foot, 8 times for each foot.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

c. Bend your foot up and down 30 times.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

– Wearing good footwear with good support.
– Hot shower or ice packs on the effected area. (Try both and you can decide on what relieves your pain better).


When cramps occur, you can stretch the calves by raising your toes, walking or by elevating your legs.

– Changes in posture

Pregnant lady can relieve foot pain by feet baths, elevation, massages and wearing well fitted shoes.
