Back Pain during Pregnancy

It may start early in pregnancy.

It is common that it may get worse later in pregnancy.

Causes:
1. Stretching of the ligaments and joints of lower back and pelvis preparing the body for labor.
2. Gaining extra weight.

Types of back pain during pregnancy:

1. Lower back pain:
at and above the waist, in the center. Check the picture.
2. Posterior pelvic pain:
Check the picture.
It can extend to the buttock and thighs.
This type of pain can increase with rolling in bed, walking, climbing the stairs or long sitting and standing.

Exercises to reduce the pain:
1. Yoga with a qualified instructor.

Tips to reduce back pain:
1. Wear shoes with good support that are low heeled and not flat.
2. Keep your back straight when sitting. You can use special pillows.
3. Do not lift heavy things.
4. Bend your knees and keep your back straight when taking something up from the floor.
5. Taking warm baths and massages might help.
6. Sleep on a firm mattress.
7. Sleep on the side with pillow between the knees.
8. If standing for long, use a box or a stool to put one foot on.
9. Pain killers: paracetamol is safe during pregnancy, two pills every 6 hours as needed.

Contact your doctor when:
1. Severe pain.
2. Sudden pain.
3. The pain is associated with vaginal bleeding or pain when urinating. As that might be a sign of urine tract infection.
4. Cramping pain, that might be a sign of preterm labor.
