Essential Oils and Pregnancy
What is an essential oil?
It is a concentrated liquid extracted from plants.
The concern:
Some essential oils might metabolize into toxic compounds when absorbed through the bloodstream.
You can absorb them:
- Through the skin
- Via the respiratory system
General rules:
- Always check with your doctor first regarding the use of essential oils
- Do not use one particular oil for a long period of time
- Avoid using essential oils during the first trimester
- Avoid ingesting and applying undiluted essential oils during pregnancy
- When using the oils topically, always dilute them (2%-3% in: jojoba, coconut, sweet almond, apricot,extra virgin olive oil) as they are very concentrated that can irritate the skin
- In diffusers, start with a small amount (just a drop) and gradually increase based on your tolerance
- If inhaled, try placing the oil on a tissue or cotton ball, so you can easily remove it if you can not tolerate it
- Stick to the recommended dosage only, and follow the guidelines of use
- If you are planning to take an aromatherapy massage, make sure the therapist is trained for dealing with pregnant ladies
- Stop using the oil and seek medical help as soon as possible in case of any adverse reaction such as:
- Headaches & migraines
- Watery eyes
- Respiratory problems
- Irritability
- Seizures
- Skin rashes, Redness, itching
Essential oils that are considered safe during pregnancy:
For nausea and sickness:
- Ginger, Cardamom, lemon oils
Relaxation and good sleep:
- Lavender oil
- Rose oil
- Chamomile oil: also can help in easing headache
- Frankincense, Neroli, Petitgrain
Other:
Citrus oils (Tangerine, Orange, Mandarin,, Bergamot), bitter almond, argan, patchouli, pomegranate, fennel, cypress, myrtle essential, Spearmint, Eucalyptus, Sandalwood, Tea Tree.
Peppermint oil:
It can be helpful for nausea, nasal congestion, muscle aches and headaches. But some experts advise to avoid it completely during pregnancy.
Tips to find good quality essential oils:
- Oils in dark-colored glass containers
- Pure 100٪ with no additives or chemical fragrance
- From reputable aromatherapy companies
It is advised to avoid using essential oils in case of:
- Vaginal bleeding during the pregnancy
- History of miscarriage
- Epilepsy
- Thyroid, liver or kidney disease
- Heart or blood clotting problems
- Diabetes
- Taking antibiotics or antihistamines
