This treatment option is best suited for patients with hCG levels of 5000 mIU\/mL or less.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><p><b>How is it administered?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is given as an injection into the muscle (usually in the buttocks). Usually it is given for one time, but few women may need a second or more based on the doctor&#8217;s decision.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><p><b>How it works:<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After giving the methotrexate injection, the level of the hCG hormone is monitored through a blood test on the fourth and seventh day and then weekly until the hormone level returns to its normal level. This process may take several weeks. Surgery might be done if the medication does not work.<\/span><\/p><hr \/><p><b>Possible side effects:<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They may include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea and vomiting<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abdominal cramps<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rash<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indigestion<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache or dizziness from light<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitiveness to sunlight<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temporary hair loss<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat or mouth<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung inflammation, rare<\/span><\/li><\/ul><hr \/><p><b>You should go to the hospital immediately if any of the following symptoms occur:<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe abdominal pain<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shoulder pain<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy vaginal bleeding or bruising and unusual bleeding<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness or fainting<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><hr \/><p><b>The patient should avoid:<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intercourse during treatment until the hormone level stabilizes. Talk to your doctor about when it is safe to resume.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid pregnancy for 3 months after treatment. Consult the doctor for the suitable contraceptive options.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Voltaren, and aspirin. Avoid taking these medications during treatment and for a week after treatment ends.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products containing folic acid, such as vitamins during the treatment, may reduce the effectiveness of treatment.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><hr \/><p><b>Safety precautions:<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methotrexate can remain in body fluids (vomit, Urine and feces) for up to seven days after completion of treatment.
